In a pinch, you can use breathing techniques to instantly change your emotions. Want to get angry, breathe in heavy and exhale heavy quickly. You will see how fast you can become angry

The Meisner technique is far superior to the Adler technique. It's more of a "what's my problem with you" than bringing up personal experiences to bring up emotions. You don't need to recall the day your dog died to make you cry in a scene where your wife is dying. Just connect with the other person and allow yourself to have a thin skin.

Hey Chris, great Video! Just a quick question but it's to do with units. For every new unit, do you have to follow a new objective or can you still follow the same objective from the last beat? I only ask because from what I've read, people seem to say that a character has one main objective (want) in a scene. Any explanation would be really appreciated. Cheers

Hi, thanks for the video, this is very useful. I have a question though. I am studying in a drama school and we often talk about objectives. You give an exemple of an objective "I want to convince that I am right", but I remember that one of my teacher said that an objective has to be a verb, an action and get upset when one student said he want to "convince" someone else, because he is afraid that people will only talk on stage and not act. What do you think ?

I always found accessing emotional memory from the past very stressful, I was at a juncture where I thought I should stop learning acting.. but then I came across your channel.. thank you so very much for affirming my belief that it indeed can be stressful and also not true to the given situation... I am trying now to play a character by building a backstory and trying to put myself in that situation.. and yes I can confirm that it wouldn't work on day one (at least for me).. but as you go through the character few days, you feel for him/her.. I latch on to that.

U overlooked Method actor/teacher Bobby Lewis when U named teachers ..Bobby was in Group Theater .. founded The Actors Studio w EliaKazan.. both working directors they gave it over to unemployed Lee Strasberg.. Bobby Lewis wrote book “Method or Madness” created/launched Yale’s Drama Department where he taught Meryl Streep.. she recommended him to study with bcause of his excellence in conveying the core of method acting🎭♥️

hi i really would like how al came with how he will say a particular dialogue, his movement when he says it , his eyes , his hands, fir example in the scene of kiss me man in dog day afternoon how he moves his hand and blow a kiss, also in the scne of im in the dark here, how he emphasise the A in the dark . i wanna know how he come up with these things and as an actor how can i come up with suh things. thanks

So what’s the point, the perfect rhetoric? , the ultimate bald statement, it’s a bit of a one trick pony, how many times do you need to be told? would you sit through a play that’s telling you this over and over? I know it’s the truth but I think I like a bit of diversion with my quest for the sublime. Morse Peckham says “art is the exposure to the tensions and problems of a false world in order that man may endure the tensions and problems of the real world.” Fair nuff. Stuart Lee does a routine where for 50 minutes , I know I counted them , he repeats the same details about a skate boarder in Milton Keynes , very funny as a concept but like the London Stock Exchange a one off building with all its guts on the outside , it’s not something that evokes emulation or repetition, and in Stuart Lees case it’s was the thirty second time he repeated himself that really made me laugh The ultimate statement isn’t worth saying, surely that the point of post modernism Kylie is every bit as valid as Michael Angelo, art is invalid , it’s an art form to invalidate art, the revolution will be televised it’s all Sisyphean but how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times , how many times, how many times …..

OMG OMG Sense memory is NOT limited to that which you personally have experienced!!!! Full freaking stop. That is a misunderstanding from the US tour Stanislavsky took in the 30's. He was never able to convince his American proteges that they were laboring under enormous misconceptions, partly because they had already significantpy monetarily capitalized on the ideas they had seized on, called THAT "method" and so they all flatly refused to listen to a word he said. It freaking broke his heart and his spirit. It was plain greedy and shitty. Here's how the whole thing went down. This is just one of the reasons I won't teach American Method. Stanislavsky was always experimenting and for a brief - very brief - second, he put forth the idea (just a notion, as he had not yet worked with it and once he did, he quickly discarded it as not useful and potentially even dangerous) namely, that you can work with what you personally have experienced only. And that you can draw from it like drawing water from a well, again and again. Sadly, THIS NOTION IS FALSE. It leads to desensitization, which then leads to forced acting, which then leads the actor to shut down. As in flat, boring performances that are not "nuanced", or truthful, just dull and repetitive. The emperor, in effect, has no clothes. No one wants to admit they are bored and frustrated. If you're feeling frustrated, "stuck" and not enjoying acting, this is the BIGGEST reason why. Because that shit is also massively triggering and can even inflict harm. People like River Phoenix, who were abused and used these memories in their work, have been driven to suicide. It IS a wonderful way to control people, though. And control they did. Just read up on what Marilyn Monroe's teacher DID to her. Monsters. Sense memory is the exact opposite of recalling personal emotional traumas. It most closely resembles what very small children do when they are playing "pretend", which is an engrossing, all immersive experience during which the constricting sense of self IS COMPLETELY LOST, subsumed by completely other individuals, with unique habits of locomotion, facial expression, gesture, memory and objectives.

Hi. I bet you get this question a lot, but what videos or books should I watch/read as someone who wants to get into acting (and as a total beginner with no professional experience)? For some reason, I've always been aware of Stanislavsky's theories but unconsciously. I've read a lot of self help books such as psychocybernetics, and they all taught me to imagine how my ideal self would act or react in certain circumstances, so you'd transition into your ideal self without any real forcing. I know acting isn't about actually becoming, but we can say it's still quite similar. I'm also Italian. Do you think I should start in Italy and build a portfolio and only then consider trying abroad? Thanks a lot in advance.

I found this short lecture/class on acting very helpful. And don’t worry it’s not about effective memory for playing a part which Stanislavski first introduced, it’s something more important and better for actors, wishing to grasp onto a character.
